Weingut Friedrich Becker

Weingut Friedrich Becker Friedrich and Fritz Becker, Weingut Friedrich Becker

As a young man, Friedrich Becker dared to break with the family tradition of supplying grapes to the local cooperative and began to bottle his own wines instead.  The risky step has paid off: for years, his Pinot Noirs have been among the best produced in Germany.

Wines of uncompromising quality

Although his father was a board member of the regional co-operative, Friedrich Becker refused to hand over his grapes and set up his own business. From the very beginning, he focussed on straightforward, dry wines in the style of great Burgundy. In 1973, he filled the first bottles and labelled them with the Füchschen label, which has become his trademark.

German wines on Alsatian soil

The declaration of their wines repeatedly poses problems for the Beckers in terms of wine law. The majority of their vineyards are located on Alsatian land and are farmed on a leasehold basis. As the vineyard name ‘Kammerberg’ is used by an Alsatian co-operative, the German wine may not be marketed under the same name. This is why the label for the Pinot Noir Grosses Gewächs is only labelled ‘KB’. The old names such as ‘Heydenreich’ or ‘Sankt Paul’ may be used for the other vineyards.

Fritz with fresh ideas

In summer 2020, Friedrich handed over responsibility for the estate to his son Friedrich Wilhelm. Young Fritz has stayed true to Fritz senior’s legacy, not least because it was his father’s vision and hard work that made everything possible in the first place. However, Fritz junior believes there is no such thing as the perfect wine and wants to continue fine-tuning the house style while remaining receptive to new approaches and trends that can enhance winegrowing and winemaking.
