Hand-picked and hand-selected grapes. Gentle pressing followed by fermentation in oak casks (partially with wild yeasts). Subsequent maturation on the fine lees through the winter until bottling in the spring.
Pale lemon. Rich nose of apricot, peach, lemon and grapefruit, with pronounced minerality and subtle smokey note. Good concentration on the palate, with a tightly woven structure and freshness. Slightly peppery note on a long finish.
Halgans is the new name for the bottling previously called 'Halenberg trocken', and the local term for a species of crane – a pointed reference to Halenberg's special microclimate. Strong thermal winds blow through the vineyard – warm air currents that rise up the steep slope (gradient of up to 70 degrees) from the valley below. As a result, the grapes are smaller and develop an especially exquisite aroma. The predominant soils on this south-facing incline consist of slate and quartzite.
