The primary focus during the vinification stage is on the preserving and expressing the purity of the fruit picked in the vineyard. Selective manual harvest followed by slow fermentation based on the wild yeasts that occur naturally in the vineyard – a process that can last more than 10 months. Maturation in traditional Mosel Fuder (oak casks).
Generous on the nose, with yellow fruit and notable minerality. Wonderful precision on the palate. Quite linear and unembellished. An impressive ensemble.
Sourced from Pündericher Marienburg – a Grosse Lage (or grand cru) that accounts for the lion's share of the winery's acreage. The vineyard comprises almost the entire slope across the river from Pünderich and has a south-to-south-easterly aspect. Until the 1970s, Marienburg consisted of various smaller sub-plots. The estate now produces individual wines again from these different parcels. Grey weathered slate dominates the terroir in the original part of Marienburg. This is where the grapes for this Grosses Gewächs were sourced.
