The primary focus during the vinification stage is on the preserving and expressing the purity of the fruit picked in the vineyard. Selective manual harvest followed by slow fermentation based on the wild yeasts that occur naturally in the vineyard – a process that can last more than 10 months. Maturation in traditional Mosel Fuder (oak casks).
Green apple, ripe orange, pineapple, apricot and delicate herbal notes on the nose. Although this Riesling is already very approachable, it still needs ageing to reveal its true greatness. Grippy and assertive mouthfeel on the palate, with wonderfully balanced, crisp acidity. Pink grapefruit and slate minerality on a long finish.
The grapes for this Riesling are sourced from Fahrlay – a sub-plot of Pündericher Marienburg situated directly next to the Pünderich ferry crossing. 'Fahr' refers to the ferry, while 'Lay' is an old word that means slate. Fahrlay is the only Pünderich vineyard in which blue slate is the main constituent. The vineyard's extremely stony, blue weathered slate soil is particularly hard, forcing the vines to dig deep into subterranean slate fissures in order to reach water. This results in wines of extreme concentration and singular minerality.
