Made from the same fruit as the winery's top wine Spring Mountain, albeit without the addition of pressed juice. Maturation in second- and third-use French oak barrels – consequently, Tanbark Hill is less oak-influenced with gentler, sweeter tannins. It boasts just as much depth and finesse as the 'grand vin' but is more approachable at a young age.
Intense aromas on the nose, with blackcurrant, cranberry, bell pepper, Mediterranean herbs and a touch of forest floor. With soft tannins, juicy acidity and a medium body, the palate has a pleasing Bordeaux-like elegance and is anything but opulent.
Sourced at an altitude of almost 700 metres above sea level, from a vineyard planted in 1981 on the slopes of Spring Mountain just beyond the town of St. Helena. The soils are of volcanic origin.
