Weingut von Oetinger
Achim von Oetinger, the man at the helm of this third-generation Erbach estate, is not your average winemaker. Since starting from scratch in 2008, Achim has been relentless in his quest for excellence. By daring to stray from the mainstream, he produces wines that have attracted attention and recognition beyond Germany’s borders.
Winegrowing has been in the von Oetinger family since 1828, but it was not until 1966 that Robert von Oetinger laid the foundation for what would later be called Weingut von Oetinger. Son Achim has been running this third-generation family winery since 2005.
A new start
Winemaker and viticulturalist Achim von Oetinger is quite a phenomenon. In 2008, he opted for a new, uncompromising approach in the pursuit of quality, respecting time-old methods while pushing the envelope with new ideas that would improve his wines.
Quality – starting in the vineyard
Achim owns 12 hectares of prime vineyard land, of which Riesling accounts for 90%. Loess is the dominant soil. The estate holdings in Erbach include prestigious single vineyards such as Hohenrain, Marcobrunn and Siegelsberg. Thoughtful winter pruning, crop thinning, leaf removal, and selective hand-picking are just some of the many quality-conscious elements that Achim applies to his work in the vineyard. On the other hand, Achim’s cellar work is minimalistic – he shepherds the wines without manipulation.
International recognition
Von Oetinger won the 2021 Vinum “Winemaker of the year” award and was crowned 2020’s “Most innovative winemaker” by wine critics James Suckling and Stuart Pigott.
“My wines are different. I put my heart and soul into what I do. And what I do is anything but mainstream.”

Rheingau
The sunny German wine region of Rheingau lies to the north of neighbours Rheinhessen and the Nahe. Riesling is king in the Rheingau, its character clearly different from that of other regions due to a diverse array of soils, a warm macroclimate and the protection from cold northerlies afforded by the Taunus mountains.
