Weingut Johannishof
Johannes and Sabine Eser have presided over Weingut Johannishof, a 10th-generation wine estate, since 1999. Their Rieslings have very varied personalities on account of the different terroir from which they are sourced and the gentle, sensitive winemaking to which they are treated.
Johannes and Sabine Eser run the 10th-generation Johannishof, a winery situated in the famous Rheingau village of Johannisberg, down the hill from the Johannisberg monastery and directly on the banks of the Elsterbach stream. Old records show that winegrowing in the family dates back to 1685.
Passion for Riesling
The estate comprises 18 hectares of vineyard situated in the municipalities of Winkel, Johannisberg, Geisenheim and Rüdesheim. Riesling accounts for 99% of the area under vine, reflecting the esteem in which the Esers hold the Rheingau’s premier grape. Pinot Blanc covers a mere 1%. Through thoughtful, innovative cultivation, environmentally friendly farming and gentle, judicious winemaking, Johannishof produces wines that fully reflect the individual character of each vintage. The estate’s cool, humid hillside cellar is the perfect place for these wines to rest and mature.
Characterful white wines thanks to a diversity of soils
With their calcareous loess soils, the vineyards of Winkel are a source of elegant wines that show fine interplay between fruit and acidity. The locations around Johannisberg are comprised of weathered quartzite, deep loess and loess-loam soils, producing wines of pronounced character with mineral hints. The famous slopes of Rüdesheim are home to Taunus quartzite soils. They have a very sunny aspect near to the banks of the Rhine, resulting in wines that show considerable ripeness along with delicate fruit acidity, great complexity, and balance.
“We believe that good wine is a symbiosis of nature and the human touch.”
Johannes and Sabine Eser

Rheingau
The sunny German wine region of Rheingau lies to the north of neighbours Rheinhessen and the Nahe. Riesling is king in the Rheingau, its character clearly different from that of other regions due to a diverse array of soils, a warm macroclimate and the protection from cold northerlies afforded by the Taunus mountains.
