Weingut Gunderloch
Weingut Gunderloch is a sixth-generation winery run by the Hasselbach family. The estate attaches great importance to preserving and sustaining the health of its vineyards and soils. This results in concentrated, long-lived, minerally wines.
Few other German vineyards are as revered as the historic ‘Roter Hang’, a picturesque set of steep slopes that rise up from the Rhine between the towns of Nackenheim and Nierstein. Its ancient, iron-oxide-laced, red, clayey slate soil, known as Rotliegend, has almost mythical status among wine lovers.
A family tradition
Mainz banker Carl Gunderloch laid the foundations of the winery when he purchased the fabled Nackenheimer Rothenberg in 1890. Six generations later and this place remains home to the Gunderloch family. The 24-hectare Rheinhessen estate is a cradle of pure, mineral-driven wines that reflect Gunderlochs’ unique blend of experience and ingenuity, every bottle an expression of the family’s dedication to the Rothenberg vineyard.
Responsibility for the future
Johannes Hasselbach now presides over the winery. Inspired but analytical, modest but ambitious, conscious of tradition but open to innovation – he has been able to grow into his role by embracing qualities that seem contradictory on the surface. Johannes believes that he has a responsibility to preserve and build on what previous generations of his family achieved. He understands the potential of his vineyards and gives his wines the time they need to fulfil their promise.
“Every generation ends up defining its own unique relationship with the Rothenberg slope. We live on it, from it and with it. The hill makes us who we are.”
Johannes Hasselbach
