Hand-picked Pinot Meunier grapes from a small plot that was planted in 1974. No herbicides, insecticides or any other chemical treatments are used to farm the vineyard. The 2019 base wine was fermented and matured in oak barrels before being left on the lees for two years. 'Chaillets Loupettes' is a brut nature with no dosage and no sulphur added.
Fascinating, fruity nose of red berries and nuts. The yeasty autolysis-related aromas are notable but not overly dominant. Fine mousse on the palate. The autolysis notes are somewhat more pronounced in the mouth than on the nose, but the wine remains very fruit-driven. Lots of finesse and grip on a persistent mineral finish.
The estate has 7.25 hectares under vine, all situated in Vandières in the heart of the Marne Valley. Its 36 plots, mostly comprising old vines, grow on south- and south-east-facing slopes consisting of a patchwork of clay-limestone, chalk, sand and clay soils that make up a diverse and complex terroir. The Pinot Meunier for this champagne comes from 'Chaillets Loupettes', a plot that was planted in 1974.
