Weingut Rainer Sauer

Weingut Rainer Sauer Daniel and Rainer Sauer, Weingut Rainer Sauer

For decades, the Sauer family have put their heart and soul into growing Silvaner, the grape variety that grows in more than half of their vineyards. Thanks to their hard work and dedication, the family are able to produce expressive, vibrant wines of crystalline character.

This winery is synonymous with Silvaner. The grape accounts for 65% of the 15-hectare family holdings. Giving the wine plenty of time to find its inner tranquillity and balance at all stages of the vinification process is the mantra at this estate. Coupled with the winemaker’s own experience and intuition, it is an approach that has helped to put Escherndorf and its exceptional, steep shell-limestone terroir on the map.

Changing of the guard

Rainer Sauer and his wife Helga began running the family winery in 1979. They handed over the reins to their son Daniel and his wife Annemarie in 2021. Daniel, a Geisenheim graduate, has been in charge of cellar operations at the estate for a good many years already, representing the next successful generation in the Sauer family. The DLG (German Agricultural Society) named Daniel their young winemaker of the year in 2011.

Future-proofing the winery

Renovation work on the winery was completed in spring 2015. Sensitive architecture combining old and modern elements has helped to enhance the authenticity of the building and lay the foundations for an exciting new era at this top-quality Silvaner producer.

“Great wines need a lot of time, but the processes involved in getting there are incredibly challenging and dynamic. Doing the right thing at the right time is important. This makes my work exciting – and spurs me on.”

Franconia

Put simply, Silvaner is Franken’s USP. Vinified dry or bone dry, this native white grape has a slightly spicy character that complements the region’s diverse local cuisine. Increasingly, however, the cultivation of Pinot Noir is also popular.
