Philipp Kuhn used to be a bit of a wunderkind – and it almost feels like he still is, considering the regular national and international accolades that continue to come his way. The Laumersheim grower has been making exceptional dry Rieslings and red and white Pinots since 1992. 

Philipp Kuhn had to take on the responsibility of running his parents’ estate from the tender age of 20. It was a huge step to take, but everything fell into place, not least because his father gave him free rein. Philipp’s first vintage was 1992. He joined the prestigious Association of German Prädikat Wineries (VDP) as early as 2008. Today, with more than 30 masterfully crafted vintages, he is recognised as one of the leading figures in the German wine world.

Premium vineyards as the foundation for exeptional wines

The foundation of Philipp Kuhn’s success lies not only in his intuition sensitive way in which he approaches viticulture and winemaking but also in his impressive portfolio of outstanding single vineyards in the northern Pfalz. These vineyards form the basis that gives his distinctive wines their unique profile and character. His well-known terroirs include Kirschgarten and Steinbuckel in Laumersheim, the Kallstadt duo of Saumagen and Steinacker, plus Schwarzer Herrgott in the nearby Zellertal valley. The most important grape varieties are Riesling, covering 17 hectares, and Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir), covering 13 hectares.

Sustainability in viticulture

Philipp Kuhn is committed to sustainable wine production. His vineyards have been farmed organically for many years, and he is a founding member of the Fair 'n Green association, which promotes sustainable and fair wine production practices. In the cellar, he works with equal care: wood use is deliberate, and second wines mature exclusively in used barriques. The modern wine cellar, housing around 1,500 barriques, was built to accommodate the healthy growth of the winery in recent years.
