Weingut Bernhard Huber

Weingut Bernhard Huber Julian and Barbara Huber, Weingut Bernhard Huber

Julian Huber and his mother Barbara have been running Weingut Bernhard Huber since 2014. They mainly grow the Pinot varieties and Chardonnay. Pinot Noir is the linchpin grape with which the winery has earned success and recognition outside Germany.

Weingut Berhard Huber in Malterdingen is the closest you can come to a piece of the Côte d’Or anywhere in Baden. Bernhard and Barbara Huber established the estate after deciding to leave their local wine cooperative in 1987. Since then, the Hubers have always afforded their wines slow, complete fermentations as well as long periods of maturation on the lees. Ever since the estate’s first bottled vintage, 1988, Huber wines have never been filtered.

A sweet spot for Pinot Noir

Cistercian monks brought Pinot Noir with them to Malterdingen over 700 years ago. Their estate was situated within a cadastral plot called Mönchhofmatten, which is now home to Weingut Bernhard Huber. The modern-day property comprises 28 hectares of vineyard, some of which are very steep and go by fabled names such as Wildenstein, Schlossberg, Sommerhalde and Bienenberg. The Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir) from these Grosse Lagen (grands crus) attract high scores from international critics – as well as great demand.

Following in his father’s footsteps

When Bernhard Huber died in June 2014 following a long illness, son Julian sought to carry on his father’s legacy, taking over vineyard and winery operations with the help of his mother Barbara. His 2013 Spätburgunder Alte Reben, the first vintage that he finished off himself, won first place at the German Red Wine Awards. Julian conducts rigorous selection both in the vineyard and at the winery. This translates into Grosse Gewächse of exceptional quality but even greater scarcity.
