Barossa Valley, Australia
Turkey Flat Vineyards
Barossa-based Turkey Flat is an estate that has attracted attention far beyond Australia, mainly for its consistently high-quality single-varietal wines.
Comprising vineyards planted with Shiraz in 1847 and Grenache in 1921, Turkey Flat originally belonged to pioneer settler Johann Fiedler. Gottlieb Ernst Schulz, a successful butcher, bought the property in 1865. The estate is situated on the rich alluvial flats that straddle Tanunda Creek.
Successful transition from grape producer to wine producer
Instead of vinifying its own grapes, the vineyard used to sell its fruit to other producers including Penfolds. It was not until the beginning of the 1990s that fourth-generation owners Christie and Peter Schulz decided to set up their own fully fledged winery and make the transition from grape producer to wine producer. They converted the old Schulz family butcher’s shop into the cellar door and heart of their Turkey Flat wine business. Success was not long in coming. Today, Turkey Flat is regarded as one of the best producers in the Barossa Valley.
Sustainable viticulture
Sustainability informs all vineyard work at Turkey Flat. Practices include building organic carbon in the vineyard and minimising tillage to improve moisture retention in the soil.
Turkey Flat is an award-winning estate, producing wines of great integrity that showcase how exciting the Barossa Valley can be.
“We want our vineyards to be in balance with their surrounds, only requiring the most minimum of inputs as each season dictates.”
Christie Schulz
