San Valentino Azienda Agricola

San Valentino Azienda Agricola Roberto Mascarin, San Valentino Azienda Agricola

Perched on a hill near Rimini, the San Valentino estate has been farmed organically by Roberto Mascarin since 1997. Roberto’s wines are now among the most prestigious and decorated in Emilia Romagna.

San Valentino has belonged to the Mascarin family since 1990. It is situated on a hill only a few kilometres away from the beaches of Rimini. With the nearby Monte Titano providing protection from the prevailing weather, San Valentino’s home region is nicknamed the ‘Bolgheri of Romagna’ on account of its unique microclimate.

Dedicated to high-quality wine

Roberto took over the estate from his father Giovanni Mascarin in 1997. He restructured and expanded the business, planting new vineyards and achieving some challenging goals within a few years. San Valentino is now a modern, innovative enterprise attracting impressive scores from international critics. High-profile winemaker Luca D’Attoma, who was responsible for the new plantings during the 2000s, has returned to help farm the vineyards and produce the wines.

Organic viticulture

The vineyards cover 17 hectares, all on hilly terrain with a southerly or south-westerly aspect. Sangiovese and Rebola account for 70% of the vines, with Cabernet Franc, Syrah and Merlot making up the rest. All the farming is organic, with the ground between every second vine row kept green.

Emilia Romagna

Although mass production dwarfs the output of its quality growers, Emilia-Romagna counts among Italy’s most diverse wine regions, with a rich heritage to match that of its culinary treasures. Emilia-Romagna and Lambrusco are closely intertwined, but red wines from the Sangiovese grape are the real star.
