Bündner Herrschaft (Graubünden), Switzerland
Fadri Itin
Fadri Itin from the Bündner Herrschaft region is one of a new generation of hugely talented Swiss winemakers. He produces two exciting wines – a Pinot Noir and a Chardonnay – in the cellars of his employer Schloss Salenegg.
Fadri, who grew up in the village of Trin near Flims, picked up his winemaking skills from Hanspeter Lampert and Andrea Davaz. Since 2018, he has been working in Maienfeld at Europe’s oldest wine estate Schloss Salenegg.
Making wine from his own grapes
Fadri dreamed of making his own wine from the outset. On hearing of his plans, Schloss Salenegg sold the motivated young man some of its grapes and lent him use of its cellar. Since his first vintage in 2020, Fadri has continued to use his employer’s winemaking facilities.
Small-batch wines from Graubünden
The volume of fruit that Fadri receives is limited, so his wines are still hard to come by. He only filled two barrels of Chardonnay and three barrels of Pinot Noir in 2022. Fadri makes his wines with a great deal of love. He tries to be as non-interventionist as possible, firmly believing that less is more.
Inspired by the sound of chirping birds on his daily commute to work, Fadri has named his wines after words in his native Romansh. ‘Sgraflin’ refers to a mountain-dwelling bird called the wallcreeper, while ‘Polischet’ means wren.
