Dirupi

Dirupi Pierpaolo Di Franco, Dirupi

Owners Davide and Pierpaolo grow Nebbiolo on the exceptionally steep slopes of the Alpine valley known as the Valtellino. This is challenging, back-breaking work, translating into wines of great elegance and beauty. Dirupi is a winery worth your attention.

Davide Fasolini and Pierpaolo Di Franco, Valtellina locals born and bred, are two of the craziest, most lovable winemakers you will ever meet. They established Dirupi in 2004 after studying oenology in Milan.

Nebbiolo in steep-slope and terraced vineyards

Their holdings make up as little as three hectares, divided into 18 small plots situated at altitudes of between 500 and 600 metres. Most of these vineyards are steep-slope or terraced sites supported and protected by drystone walls. Reaching them is a physical challenge in itself. Davide and Pierpaolo have to negotiate numerous steps and levels, some of which are overhanging and require a sure footing.

Boutique quality

The same year in which they started the business saw the duo release 1,600 bottles of their inaugural vintage. Davide and Pierpaolo want their Nebbiolos to appeal to young people and people who are young at heart. Their wines are fresh, fruit-driven, complex and relatively light in colour. They currently produce around 35,000 bottles every year – a volume still very much within ‘boutique’ proportions. The winery is certified as organic since 2016.
