Rheinhessen, Germany
Weingut Wechsler
Rheinhessen has a new name to add to its roll call of talented winemakers. Katharina Wechsler has wasted little time in making her mark since taking over from her parents in 2017, fearlessly forging her own path to craft a range of delicious, authentic wines in Westhofen.
Based in the historical old town centre of Westhofen in Rheinhessen, Weingut Wechsler comprises 17 organically farmed hectares of vineyard. Limestone-rich soils imbue the character of the wines.
From Berlin to Westhofen
The ambitious Katharina Wechsler decided to follow her heart in her early 30s, giving up her career in Berlin to return home and take over the family estate. After studying viticulture, she wasted no time in transforming what was a bulk-wine producer to one that makes and bottles wine from its own grapes. Her winery is now one of Rheinhessen’s top addresses. After taking over the reins in 2017, she transitioned the estate to organic, starting in 2018. In April 2022, Katharina’s husband Manuel Maier joined the estate’s management team.
Authentic wines from top sites
Katharina’s portfolio of vineyards includes prime sites like Kirchspiel, Morstein and the six-hectare monopole Benn. The fruit for her Ortswein village-level bottlings also comes exclusively from these vineyards. Katharina’s wines are lively, expressive, elegant and a joy to drink. They translate skill, intuition and trust into distinctiveness, elegance and finesse.
“We stand for living vineyards, authentic wines and the unflagging courage to try something new. Together with Manuel and our team, we will pursue this path with passion and steadfastness, and continue to define our own distinct wine style.”
