Ca'n Verdura Viticultors Tomeu Llabrés, Ca'n Verdura

Mallorcan native Tomeu Llabrés likes to champion his home island’s indigenous grape varieties. At his Binissalem micro-winery, he does everything by hand to produce an array of exciting wines that marry innovation and tradition.

The Llabrés family have viticulture in their blood, having tended the vines of local farms and wineries for the past six generations.

Going it alone

Tomeu Llabrés, the youngest of his generation of the family, decided to go it alone and get into winemaking proper, studying oenology in Tarragona before gaining practical experience in Priorat. After returning to Mallorca in 2008, Tomeu initially worked at other estates on the island with his father. The Ca’n Verdura story began two years later, when father and son proceeded to make their own wine from a surplus batch of Manto Negro grapes. They vinified the wine in a garage and called it ‘L’Origen’ (The Origin). The inaugural vintage amounted to a mere 700 bottles.

Focusing on indigenous grapes like Manto Negro

Tomeu aims to make true Mallorcan wines using native grape varieties such as Manto Negro and Moll. Thanks to his creative, innovative approach, he has been able to breathe new life and character into these traditional varieties.

Located in Binissalem in Mallorca’s interior, Ca’n Verdura is a diminutive estate currently comprising three hectares. The vineyards sit at an altitude of 100 to 150 metres. Everything at the property is done the old-school way – by hand.
