Only healthy grapes at peak ripeness were selectively harvested by hand for this Chardonnay. After six hours on their skins, the grapes were gently pressed. The juice was fermented in a temperature-controlled 1,200-litre oak cask, with no filtering or fining.
Complex nose of grapefruit, orange and star fruit, rounded off with oriental spice, black tea and vanilla. Wonderfully fresh on the palate, with vibrant fruit acidity.
Situated in a saddle between Hammertal and Schwarzbach, Johanniskreuz is regarded as the birthplace of the Palatinate Forest (Pfälzer Wald). In this small hamlet, oak trees aged between 250 and 300 years have traditionally provided a source of wood for making the old-style 1,200-litre casks (or 'Stückfässer') for which the Pfalz is well known. Markus Schneider now uses these vessels for some of his best Chardonnay.
