Weingut zum Sternen
This historic estate, which has been in the hands of the Meier family for 17 generations, comprises exceptional vineyards such as Kloster Sion in Klingnau, Im Lee in Döttingen, and Wannenberg in Würenlingen. Andreas Meier has made it his mission to express the varied terroir at his disposal.
Weingut zum Sternen has grown and expanded over numerous generations, with winegrowing in the Meier family dating back to 1828. The Meiers farm their 13 hectares of vineyard with great dedication, vinifying the fruits of their labour in a modern cellar facility. Various vineyard plots overlooking Klingnau, Döttingen and Würenlingen constitute the family’s prize asset, providing the terroir that translates into the wines themselves. The estate also includes a nationally renowned vine nursery and a restaurant.
A cerebral approach to winegrowing and winemaking
Thanks to his thorough, inquisitive, facts-based approach, Andreas Meier is able to produce precise, aromatic wines of great individuality and eloquence. Andreas is committed to quality and sustainability in everything he does in both cellar and vineyard. He only sprays his vines with organic preparations. His wine press, renovated in 2012, spans three floors and enables gravity-flow winemaking without the need for pumping.
Kloster Sion – an outstanding vineyard
Kloster Sion is probably the best-known vineyard at Weingut zum Sternen, providing the fruit for flagship wine ‘Kloster Sion Reserve’. Thanks to the site’s relatively low altitude (319 metres) and mild climate, Meier is able to get his Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris to optimum ripeness. Kloster Sion is also very special in that it continues to be a source of clone selections for the vine nursery founded by Albert Meier in 1929.
“I am a fan of precision and want my wines to reflect this. Essentially, I make ‘watchmaker wines’. I have a structured, facts-based approach.”
Andreas Meier
