Vouette & Sorbée
Not only is Bertrand Gautherot one of the few champagne producers who farm according to biodynamic principles, but he also has Demeter certification to boot. Gautherot’s exclusive, truly unique small-batch champagnes enjoy cult status and, consequently, are often sold out in France.
Vouette & Sorbée, a small property based in Buxières-sur-Acre on the Côte des Bar, produces uncompromising, unadorned, authentic grower champagnes.
Selosse was a mentor
For owner Bertrand Gautherot, the famous Anselme Selosse (of Domaine Jacques Selosse) was a huge inspiration and mentor. It is little wonder, therefore, that Bertrand harvests and vinifies each and every one of his plots individually, leaving his wines to ferment spontaneously in 400-litre oak casks. Unusually for champagne, Bertrand makes wines that are faithful to the character of their vintage. He tries to intervene as little as possible in the cellar – meaning no chaptalisation, no fining or filtration, and no dosage. Vouette & Sorbée adheres to biodynamic principles and even has Demeter certification.
International recognition
Vouette & Sorbée is a singular grower-producer held in high regard around the world, responsible for some of the rarest and most sought-after champagnes around. “The world needs these wines,” Antonio Galloni once wrote. These are truly great, avant-garde, artisan champagnes. They should be opened in advance (at least one hour) and served in regular wine glasses, never flutes.
