G.D. Vajra

The story of G.D. Vajra speaks to a love of the land – one which founder Aldo Vajra has nurtured ever since he was a child. Together with his family, Aldo produces wines that do not need to talk out loud or flex their muscles in order to give pleasure.

Established in the early 1970s, this winery is located in Vergne in the western part of Barolo. The Vajra family holdings comprise 60 hectares and include Bricco dele Viole, the highest cru in Barolo. In 2009, the Vajras took on responsibility for an additional two Barolo crus after acquiring the Luigi Baudana estate in Serralunga d’Alba.

A young pioneer

The winery initials ‘G.D.’ stand for Giuseppe Domenico, Aldo Vajra’s father, who signed the estate’s initial registration documents because Aldo himself was younger than 18 at the time. Aldo joined Suolo e Salute, Italy’s oldest organic association, in 1971 and became one of Piedmont’s organic pioneers. Together with wife Milena, whom he married in the 1980s, Aldo made the winery world-famous. The next generation of Vajras – Giuseppe, Francesca and Isidoro – have since joined the business. 

Characterful, elegant Barolo

Natural farming methods are a matter of course at this estate, with late-ripening fruit translating into authentic, characterful, complex wines that exude cool elegance. The Vajras, who are blessed with modern, functionally designed cellar facilities, want vibrant acidity to complement the aromatic finesse in their wines.
