Conceito Wines Conceito Wines

The soft and fresh wines from Conceito Wines are impressive across the board! They rely on a variety of indigenous grape varieties that are a reflection of the terroir and offer exciting blending possibilities.

The history of Conceito began in 1940, when the two brothers José and Luís Costa Ferreira acquired the first vineyard in the Vale da Teja, one of the highest and coolest regions of the Douro. At that time, the grapes were only sold to the region's major port wine houses.

Female power in the Douro

This did not change until 2000, when Carla Ferreira took over the helm with the aim of upgrading the family winery and bottling her own quality wines. When her daughter Rita Marques, a trained winemaker, joined in 2005, the wines began to be marketed internationally. Rita learnt her craft in some of the world's most fascinating wine-growing regions such as Bordeaux, California, South Africa and New Zealand and combines her in-depth knowledge of the terroir with technical expertise and a great deal of intuition. However, her time with Dirk van der Niepoort in the immediate neighbourhood was also formative, which also explains her passion for Portuguese white wine with complexity and spice. In April 2024, Rita Marques decided to devote herself fully to her new and own project and stepped down from her work as cellar master and managing director of Conceito Wines. The owner Carla Ferreira, together with the experienced team, continues to run the business at the highest level and guarantees consistent wine quality.

Portuguese ‘concept wine’ out of love for the terroir

‘Conceito’ means concept in Portuguese and is much more than just wine: it is a project that reflects the family's love of nature and the terroir, as well as the local population and farmers, and promotes the natural production of the region. The 86 hectares are cultivated entirely without the use of pesticides or herbicides.

Douro
