Rías Baixas, Spain
Bodegas Casa Monte Pío
The fresh, handcrafted wines of this small family-run winery in Galicia show true regional identity while capturing the varietal character of local grapes Albariño and Mencía.
Casa Monte Pío, founded in 1979 by Jose María Martinez, is based in the heart of the Val do Salnés sub-region of Rías Baixas near the Umia river. Jose María’s grandson Pablo Martinez joined the winery after a brief career in accounting. He now runs the family business successfully on his own.
Handcrafted organic wines
After returning to the winery in 2014, Pablo developed a passion for handcrafted wine, fully committing himself to sustainable, organic viticulture and artisan winemaking in the process. Pablo believes that outstanding wines are made in the vineyard and has set himself the goal of expressing the spirit of Rías Baixas and its unique Atlantic-influenced climate and sense of place.
Native Albariño and Mencía
To capture the terroir of this region, the young winemaker focuses on native varieties like Albariño and Mencía, both of which are widely grown in Galicia and Castilla y León. His vines, of which a proportion are pergola-trained, receive individual care and attention according to the growing conditions of each vintage. Honest, fresh wines of unique character are the delightful result.
“We are conscious that the secret to good wine is in the soil. To make the most of our native varieties, we focus on working in the vineyard, treating each vine like an individual and living being.”
Pablo Martinez

Rías Baixas
Rías Baixas, situated in north-western Galicia, is Spain’s standout producer of fresh, aromatic wines. The region is best known for its Albariño white wines but is also a source of fine reds from the Mencía grape. A cool Atlantic climate and unique soils lend the wines a character quite distinct from that of other Spanish wine regions.
