R. López de Heredia Viña Tondonia The López de Heredia family, R. López de Heredia Viña Tondonia

Encompassing one of Rioja’s most famous vineyards, the eponymous Viña Tondonia, this venerable estate produces extremely ageworthy wines that are coveted by critics and wine lovers alike.

For the last 140 years, various generations of the López de Heredia family have dedicated themselves to growing unique, exceptional wines in the Rioja Alta region.

Eponymous vineyard in Haro

Don Rafael López de Heredia y Landeta established the Viña Tondonia winery in Haro in 1877. He planted the eponymous Viña Tondonia vineyard in 1913 and 1914. Comprised of over 100 hectares, this legendary terroir situated on the right bank of the River Ebro is where Rioja’s most characteristic fruit and the estate’s most famous wines are sourced. The López de Heredia family own three other prime vineyards that benefit from the region’s Atlantic-influenced climate: Viña Cubillo, Viña Bosconia and Viña Zaconia.

Ageworthy white wines

The Viña Tondonia estate is also known for its complex, majestic and incredibly multifaceted white wines, which are matured for years in oak like their red counterparts. And talking of oak, Viña Tondonia has an in-house cooperage where all the barrels continue to be handcrafted. Filled with wine, these vessels are stored in a naturally cool underground cellar – a 3,400-square-metre space housing 12,900 casks.

Rioja

Rioja is one of Europe’s most important wine regions, thanks to many renowned estates that have helped make it into what it is today. Smaller producers are now taking Rioja by storm with their delicious, fresh wines, which often take the form of single-varietal interpretations.
