Marolo

Marolo Lorenzo Marolo, Marolo

Marolo is a quintessentially artisan distillery that has long been dedicated to producing high-end grappa. Its products are representative of the terroir found in the UNESCO-listed vineyard landscapes of Langhe, Monferrato, and Roero.

There was a gap in the market for quality grappa when Paolo Marolo decided to establish his eponymous distillery in 1977. The art of making grappa is of course an age-old tradition in Italy, but grappa back then was mostly consumed young and not necessarily suitable for ageing.

The dream of making handcrafted grappa

Paolo put his heart and soul into perfecting this art. His vision was to update and revive Piedmontese grappa. First he made single-varietal grappa, then single-vineyard grappa. All of his creations were a handcrafted paean to the Italy’s national spirit.

A distillery marrying innovation and tradition

Paolo’s work combines innovation and tradition. He still spends a lot of hands-on time in the cellar, bringing his experience to bear during the distillation process. His son Lorenzo, who has been working at the distillery since 2014, wants to steer the family business to further success.

“Making grappa does not mean simply distilling alcohol, but creating a unique product – one which carries the identity and characteristics of the grape variety used in its soul. Our job has always been to recognise and enhance the bond between grappa and its land of origin.”

Piedmont

Piedmont basically means ‘at the foot of the mountain’, accurately describing the region’s geographical position framed by mountains on three sides. It is one of the world’s great wine regions. Over 100 grape varieties are permitted for winegrowing in Piedmont. Red grapes Nebbiolo and Barbera are responsible for many of the best wines.
