Pfalz, Germany
Weingut Geheimer Rat Dr. von Bassermann-Jordan
This venerable estate has been at the forefront of quality winemaking for generations – and remains one of the stars in the German wine firmament. Its terroir-driven, ageworthy, highly decorated Rieslings from ‘Grosse Lage’ (grand cru) vineyards are known far beyond Germany’s borders.
The history of the Bassermann-Jordan wine estate is the history of a family dynasty which, together with others, established and has greatly influenced quality-oriented viticulture for over 300 years. From generation to generation, it has produced great personalities whose intelligence, expertise and intuition as well as economic and political clout have helped to safeguard and grow the reputation of the winery and the top echelon of Pfalz wines.
Iconic vineyards
Bassermann-Jordan is steeped in terroir, with a portfolio of outstanding soils as well as a wealth of experience born of the pioneering work of preceding generations. Its holdings in Forst, Deidesheim and Ruppertsberg cover 50 hectares situated in 20 different single-vineyards. More than a third of its plots are in top locations such as Hohenmorgen, Kirchenstück and Jesuitengarten.
From apprentice to manager
Dominik Leyrer took over at Bassermann-Jordan in 2023 as technical and managing director. Leyrer was an apprentice at the winery back in 2004 before studying viticulture and winemaking at Geisenheim. He went on to do stints at Dr. Bürklin-Wolf and Robert Weil as well as in France and South Africa – but never lost contact with his old employers in Deidesheim. Nazmiye Uzun assists Leyrer in his management role.
The winery’s iconic vaulted cellar is home to great wines that date back to the 1811 comet vintage and remain eminently drinkable.
