This, the fifth edition of 'Appius', represents the pinnacle of the 2014 vintage at Kellerei St. Michael-Eppan. Winemaker Hans Terzer again managed to craft a unique cuvée, albeit according to principles that remain constant year in, year out: low yields, fully ripe grapes and a judicious selection of individual vineyard sites according to their location and soils. This wine is a mirror image of conditions during the 2014 vintage. Long periods of rainfall made it a difficult year if truth be told. Nevertheless, Terzer harnessed what Mother Nature gave him to create an exceptionally vibrant, fresh 'Appius' with complex, intricate fruit expression on the nose. The wine is fresh on the palate, with pronounced minerality, finesse, elegance and a long finish.
Hand-picked and hand-selected grapes. Gentle pressing followed by fermentation. Subsequent maturation, including malolactic fermentation, in large oak barrels. Blending after almost one year, then further maturation on the fine lees in stainless steel for three years.
Sourced from selected south-south-west-facing vineyard sites in Appiano, where the soils consist of limestone gravel and moraine debris.
